IndiGo Q2 Results: Net Loss Narrows 27% to ₹1,879 Crore; Revenue Jumps 26%

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., the parent company of IndiGo, reported a consolidated net loss of ₹1,879.1 crore for the second quarter of FY27, narrowing 27.2% from a loss of ₹2,582.1 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

The airline’s revenue from operations increased 25.9% year-on-year to ₹23,364 crore, compared with ₹18,555 crore in Q2 FY26. However, higher aircraft fuel expenses and rupee depreciation continued to put pressure on profitability.

The results highlight a challenging operating environment for India’s largest airline, as strong revenue growth was not sufficient to offset the increase in operating expenses.

Revenue Growth Despite Passenger Traffic Decline

IndiGo recorded revenue from operations of ₹23,364 crore in Q2 FY27, registering 25.9% growth compared with ₹18,555 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Total income increased to ₹24,311.9 crore from ₹19,599.5 crore in Q2 FY26.

Interestingly, the revenue increase came despite a 4.7% decline in the number of passengers carried, which stood at 27.5 million during the quarter. The airline’s available seat kilometres also declined 1% to 40.8 billion.

The increase in revenue despite lower passenger numbers reflects the impact of passenger yields, pricing and revenue management. However, the decline in passenger traffic remains an important operating indicator to monitor.

Net Loss Narrows 27% Year-on-Year

IndiGo reported a consolidated net loss of ₹1,879.1 crore in Q2 FY27, compared with a loss of ₹2,582.1 crore in Q2 FY26.

This represents a narrowing of approximately 27.2% in the reported quarterly loss.

However, the reported improvement requires additional context. The airline’s net loss excluding foreign-exchange effects stood at ₹723.7 crore, compared with a profit of ₹103.9 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

This indicates that the improvement in reported net loss does not necessarily reflect an improvement in underlying operating profitability. Currency movements and their impact on foreign-currency liabilities remain important factors affecting the airline’s financial results.

Rising Fuel Expenses Put Pressure on Profitability

Aircraft fuel expenses increased 67.2% year-on-year to ₹9,966.8 crore during Q2 FY27.

Fuel is one of the largest operating expenses for airlines, and fluctuations in aviation turbine fuel prices can significantly influence profitability.

Apart from fuel costs, rupee depreciation also affected IndiGo’s financial performance because several aviation-related expenses and lease obligations are denominated in foreign currencies.

The increase in fuel expenses, together with currency-related pressures, limited the benefit of higher revenue during the quarter.

Capacity and Passenger Traffic Performance

IndiGo carried approximately 27.5 million passengers during Q2 FY27, registering a 4.7% decline compared with the corresponding quarter last year.

Available Seat Kilometres, which measure the airline’s passenger-carrying capacity, declined 1% to 40.8 billion.

The airline maintained a disciplined approach towards capacity deployment amid higher operating costs and challenging market conditions.

Passenger traffic, capacity utilisation, ticket pricing and operating costs will remain important indicators for assessing the airline’s performance in the coming quarters.

Management Commentary: Airfares Likely to Remain Elevated

IndiGo’s management indicated that airfares are likely to remain elevated amid the significant increase in fuel prices.

Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh also highlighted the airline’s focus on short-haul operations and prudent capacity management to navigate the challenging operating environment.

The airline is also engaging with the government regarding a proposed fuel stabilisation fund initiative to address volatility in aviation fuel expenses.

What to Watch Going Forward

IndiGo’s performance in the coming quarters will depend on several factors, including aviation fuel prices, foreign-exchange movements, passenger demand and ticket yields.

The airline’s ability to manage fuel expenses and maintain passenger yields will be important for improving operating profitability.

Investors may also monitor capacity deployment, passenger traffic trends and management’s outlook on operating costs and international operations.

Conclusion

IndiGo reported a 25.9% year-on-year increase in revenue from operations to ₹23,364 crore in Q2 FY27, while its consolidated net loss narrowed 27.2% to ₹1,879.1 crore.

Despite stronger revenue, higher aircraft fuel expenses, rupee depreciation and lower passenger traffic continued to affect the airline’s financial performance.

The loss excluding foreign-exchange effects also highlights the pressure on underlying profitability. Going forward, fuel prices, currency movements, passenger demand and capacity management will remain key factors influencing IndiGo’s earnings.
