At the same time, the Centre argued that differences in state-level taxes, not central duties are now the main reason fuel prices vary sharply across India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After the latest revision<\/strong>, petrol prices rose by 87 paise per litre and diesel by 91 paise per litre in several cities. In Delhi, petrol now costs \u20b999.51 per litre, while diesel has increased to \u20b992.49 per litre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Third Fuel Price Increase in a Single Month<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This marks the third fuel price revision in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The first major increase came on May 15<\/strong>, when prices were raised by around \u20b93 per litre, followed by another increase earlier this week. Together, the adjustments represent India\u2019s most notable fuel price movement since large revisions seen in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the government, despite rising global energy prices, India has limited cumulative increases to below \u20b95 per litre over a 76-day period following the escalation in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Centre Says State VAT Is Driving Price Differences<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While announcing the latest revisions, the Centre placed attention on state-level taxation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>According to the government, central excise duty<\/strong> remains uniform across India, but final retail prices differ because states apply their own Value Added Tax (VAT), additional cesses, and per-litre charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centre highlighted that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Andhra Pradesh<\/strong> imposes 31% VAT plus additional charges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Telangana<\/strong> has petrol prices nearing \u20b9116 per litre<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kerala<\/strong> applies a social security cess in addition to VAT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After the latest revision, petrol prices in some states moved above \u20b9112 per litre, according to government data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the Centre noted that several BJP-governed states\u2014including Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Goa, and Assam\u2014continue to keep petrol prices at or below <strong>\u20b9102 per litre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oil Prices Remain the Bigger Trigger<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the political debate is a larger economic reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil requirements, making domestic fuel prices highly sensitive to movements in global energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recent spike in oil prices has been linked to disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran conflict and concerns around global supply routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a day before the latest revision, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas assured consumers that India has adequate fuel availability and urged citizens to avoid panic buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current Petrol Prices in Major Cities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Delhi:<\/strong> \u20b999.51\/litre<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mumbai:<\/strong> \u20b9108.49\/litre<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chennai:<\/strong> \u20b9105.31\/litre<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kolkata:<\/strong> \u20b9110.64\/litre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For consumers, the result is simple\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuel costs are rising again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But whether the next move depends more on global oil prices or state taxation may now become the next major debate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fuel prices in India have moved higher once again.
