This policy, mentioned in the state budget on March 7, aims to strengthen Karnataka’s position as a global technology hub by attracting investments and creating job opportunities.

It will replace Karnataka’s Information Technology Policy 2020-2025, which ends in the current year. The previous policy had a key role in promoting IT growth beyond Bengaluru, with a target to generate around 60 lakh direct and indirect jobs in five years.

During his budget speech, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized Karnataka’s leadership in entrepreneurship, information technology, and innovation at national and international levels. To further promote research in AI, the government has proposed to set up a Centre for Applied AI for Tech Solutions (CATS) with a ₹50 crore investment in five years. Additionally, to promote research in quantum technology, Phase 2 of Quantum Research Park will be set up in collaboration with Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science with a grant of ₹48 crore in three years.

Subsidies and financial assistance worth ₹13,500 crore have been given by the government to encourage investments in areas such as IT, biotechnology, and tourism. These would result in investments worth ₹1 lakh crore and give a boost to economic growth in the state.

Global Capability Centres (GCCs) to be Expanded

Global Capability Centres (GCCs) were also a key focus in the budget. To further establish Karnataka as a hub for innovation, Mysuru, Belagavi, Dharwad, and Bengaluru will be developed as global innovation districts by KEONICS. KEONICS, Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited, was founded in 1976 to promote IT infrastructure, IT education, and e-governance solutions.

Additionally, KEONICS will set up three new Global Technology Centres with plug-and-play infrastructure in Mangaluru, Hubli, and Belagavi, further enhancing Karnataka’s role as a leader in technology and innovation.

Do you have a news tip for Lakshmishree reporters?
