In her Union Budget 2025 speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a landmark announcement regarding income tax slabs. She confirmed that individuals earning up to ₹12 lakh per annum will not be required to pay any income tax, marking a significant shift in the taxation system.
This announcement was met with applause in the House, signaling widespread support for the measure. The new tax exemption limit is seen as a boost for consumption, savings, and investments, potentially spurring economic growth. Along with this, the tax rate structures under the new tax regime were also revised to make it more beneficial for middle-class taxpayers.
The income tax exemption limits have evolved significantly over the years:
- 2005: ₹1 lakh
- 2012: ₹2 lakh
- 2014: ₹2.5 lakh
- 2019: ₹5 lakh
- 2023: ₹7 lakh
- 2025: ₹12 lakh
This revision is expected to provide considerable relief to taxpayers, further easing the financial burden on middle-income earners.
