Sanjay Malhotra Appointed as RBI Governor for Three-Year Term

Sanjay Malhotra, currently the Revenue Secretary, has been appointed as the next Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term. He will take over from the outgoing Governor, Shaktikanta Das, on December 11, according to a notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on December 9.

About Sanjay Malhotra

Sanjay Malhotra is an IAS officer from the 1990 batch of the Rajasthan cadre. He is also an alumnus of IIT Kanpur. He did a master’s in public policy from Princeton University, USA. Malhotra has rich experience in public finance, economic administration, and energy reforms.

As the Revenue Secretary, he played a key role in improving tax collections and handling GST-related policies. Earlier, he was Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, wherein he played an important role in critical reforms in banking and finance. Malhotra, during his tenure as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power, was leading the Rs 3 lakh crore power distribution reform.

Rajnish Kumar, former Chairman of SBI, stated that Malhotra’s appointment is consistent with the tradition of finance ministry officials taking on the RBI Governor role. HR Khan, a former Deputy Governor, highlighted the robust decision-making framework within the RBI that helps leaders adapt effectively.
