NTPC’s Clean Energy Arm Plans ₹1.8 Trillion Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh

NTPC Green Energy Ltd., the clean energy division of NTPC Ltd., is set to establish a massive green hydrogen hub in Pudimadaka, near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of ₹1.8 trillion ($21 billion). This ambitious project is part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and aims to bolster the country’s transition to carbon-free fuel.

The foundation stone of the project is expected to be laid by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on January 8. The production of green hydrogen by splitting hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water with the use of renewable energy will mark the path to reduce carbon emission from refineries, steel mills, and fertilizer industries.

The facility would house 20 GW of renewable energy capacity at Pudimadaka and manufacture 1,500 tpd of green hydrogen. About 7,500 tpd of green methanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel would also be manufactured from there, much of which could go for export into Europe and Asia.

India targets producing 5 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030 from near zero currently, in tune with the global drive to cut emissions and transition to cleaner varieties of energy.

Once slated for an imported coal-fired power station, Pudimadaka’s conversion into a clean energy hub underlines the growing commitment of NTPC towards renewable energy. The project by the company will go a long way in establishing India as one of the key players in green hydrogen production and exports, thus helping the world move towards decarbonization.
