The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has given the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for eight defence proposals worth over ₹54,000 crore, the Centre announced on March 20. The approvals aim to enhance India’s defence capabilities across the Army, Navy, and Air Force while supporting indigenous defence manufacturing.
For the Indian Army, the DAC approved the procurement of a 1350 HP Engine to upgrade the existing 1000 HP Engine in T-90 tanks. This upgrade will improve mobility in high-altitude areas, boosting operational efficiency in difficult terrains.
For the Indian Navy, the council cleared procurement of Varunastra, a home-grown ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo. The cutting-edge weapon system designed by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) will help combat submarine threats. BDL shares gained nearly 4% in the market after this news.
For the Indian Air Force (IAF), DAC cleared acquisition of Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) Aircraft Systems. The systems incorporate cutting-edge radars to detect and track aircraft and UAVs at long ranges. The IAF already possesses Netra AEW&C systems on Embraer aircraft, and more procurements will boost its air surveillance capability.
Apart from that, DAC has also introduced new regulations to reduce time taken in capital procurements to make procurement more efficient and prompt. The move is likely to make defence acquisitions more streamlined and facilitate timely induction of critical systems into India’s forces.
