Government clears Rs 18,658 crore railway projects in Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh to expand train network

The Union Cabinet on April 4 gave its approval to four major railway projects in Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, with a total estimated investment of Rs 18,658 crore. These projects aim to boost India’s railway infrastructure by expanding the current rail network by about 1,247 kilometres.

These multitracking projects are being undertaken by Indian Railways to improve both passenger and freight movement. As per the government, the new rail lines will help reduce travel time, cut logistics costs, lower oil imports, and decrease carbon emissions. These steps are expected to make Indian Railways more efficient, faster, and environmentally friendly.

The new projects will involve the construction of 19 railway stations. This will help improve connectivity for nearly 3,350 villages and benefit around 47.25 lakh people living in these regions. The projects are spread across 15 districts in three states and are expected to be completed by 2030-31.

Four projects sanctioned are Jarapda 3rd and 4th Line in Sambalpur in Odisha, Sason 3rd and 4th Line in Jharsuguda in Odisha, Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalakasa 5th and 6th Line in Chhattisgarh, and Gondia–Balharshah doubling in Maharashtra. All these routes have heavy traffic of coal, iron ore, and

These projects will create employment amounting to nearly 379 lakh human-days during the construction period, and will be a major boost to the employment generation in the local areas. The government further added the increased rail capacity will cut congestion and augment train operations on some of the busiest rail routes.

These rail development projects demonstrate the vision of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the creation of a more robust and self-reliant India. It will provide overall development in the region as well as create new avenues for job and business.
