China warns of strong counteraction as US plans fresh 50% tariff hike under Trump

Tensions between the US and China are rising again after former US President Donald Trump threatened a fresh 50% tariff on Chinese imports. In response, China has strongly warned that it will take strict countermeasures to protect its own rights and economy.

China’s Commerce Ministry released a statement early Tuesday calling the US move “completely groundless” and a form of “unilateral bullying.” The Ministry said China’s own tariffs are fair and meant to protect its sovereignty and the international trade order.

The strong words from China came just hours after Donald Trump announced that if China does not cancel its recent 34% tariff increase, the US will impose new tariffs of 50% starting from April 9, 2025. He made this announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump also added that all future talks with China would be cancelled if China doesn’t step back from its tariff hikes. The Chinese government responded sharply, saying, “China will fight to the end if the US continues its threats.”

This growing trade war between the two largest economies is causing nervousness in global markets. Experts fear that if the conflict becomes more serious, it may affect trade flows, increase global inflation, and hit investor confidence — all of which may impact Indian stock markets as well.

While Indian markets remain largely stable, investors should stay cautious as any major fall in global trade or a rise in commodity prices due to tariffs could also affect Indian companies that rely on exports or imported raw materials.
