Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced substantial provisions for the agriculture and allied sectors in the 2024 budget, focusing on infrastructure, research, and farmer support.
A provision of ₹1.52 lakh crore has been allocated for the agriculture and allied sectors. To enhance agricultural research, 10,000 bio-research centers will be established nationwide.
Over the next two years, one crore farmers will be initiated into natural farming, supported by branding and certification to promote organic produce. Additionally, large clusters for vegetable production and supply chains will be developed closer to consumption centres to streamline distribution.
Financial support will be provided for shrimp breeding centres, and exports will be facilitated through the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). To further support farmers, Kisan Credit Cards will be launched in five states, providing easier access to credit.
The government will release 109 new varieties of 32 crops to improve yields and crop diversity. Natural farmers will receive assistance with verification and branding to ensure marketability of their produce.
To achieve self-sufficiency in pulses and oilseeds, six crore farmers and their land will be integrated into a comprehensive farmer and land registry. This initiative aims to improve land management and crop planning.
These measures are expected to significantly boost the agricultural sector, enhancing productivity, sustainability, and market access for farmers across the country.
