BEML, a prominent player under the Ministry of Defence, has secured a Rs 866.87-crore contract from Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, to build India’s first indigenous bullet train sets. The contract includes the design, manufacturing, and commissioning of two high-speed train sets, each consisting of eight cars, with a top speed of 280 kmph. The project marks a significant milestone in India’s high-speed rail journey, aiming for delivery by 2026.
The train sets will be manufactured at BEML’s Bengaluru rail coach complex. Scheduled to operate on the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, which is expected to be functional by 2027, these trains will feature a fully air-conditioned chair car configuration and modern passenger amenities, including reclining and rotatable seats.
ICF, owned by Indian Railways and known as the world’s largest rail coach manufacturer, emphasized the project’s importance in advancing India’s rail infrastructure.
