SEBI to Get Advanced Digital Forensic Tool for Faster Market Investigations

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is set to speed up its investigation process by acquiring an advanced digital forensic tool that can quickly analyse data from seized electronic devices and provide actionable intelligence. The market regulator has shortlisted three companies for the project — L&T Technology Services, Pelorus Technologies Pvt Ltd, and Starlight Data Solutions Pvt Ltd.

According to details on the government’s GeM portal, the new solution will include both hardware and software for mobile device data analysis. It will be capable of processing data from multiple digital forensic extractions, including imaging from mobile phones, laptops, iPads, and cloud storage. The tool will also be able to integrate data, create dashboards, enable collaborative workflows, and ensure the integrity of digital evidence.

The system will have features like centralised data management, search and filters, multiple data views, network visualisation and event analysis. It should be able to handle at least 500 extractions at once, 20+ users at the same time and no limit on total data size, number of users or cases created.

SEBI currently uses different software to examine bank accounts, emails and chats collected from seized devices which takes months. The new tool will reduce this time by streamlining the analysis and help investigators to connect the dots faster.

During raids, SEBI’s forensic teams download data from devices and return them to the owners and then the long process of examination begins. With this new tool, SEBI plans to speed up case preparation and tighten the noose on market manipulators.
