Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) announced plans to enhance the country’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure by installing nearly 600 fast-charging stations nationwide over the next seven years. The initiative aims to address consumer concerns about long-distance EV commutes due to limited highway charging options.
The company intends to use its global EV and battery technology to install fast chargers on key highways and in major cities. Until December 2024, Hyundai plans to take its fast public charging network up to over 50 locations. In December 2022, there was also a recent signing of the MoU with the Tamil Nadu government to produce 100 EV charging stations by the end of 2027. It will add around ten in operation by this December end.
Hyundai has also partnered with ChargeZone and Statiq, among others, to provide access to over 10,000 charging points in the country. It has also installed DC 60 kW fast chargers at 100 dealerships, as part of its commitment to the growing EV market in India.
It is also localizing the EV supply chain, with a plan to roll out four EV models, including the much-anticipated Creta EV. The CEO, Unsoo Kim, has come out confident of India’s EV potential, which is ably supported by robust investments in infrastructure and upcoming vehicle launches.
